Top Tips for Making Your Move Go Smoothly for Your Pets

While our furry friends don't have the reams of paperwork or the physical packing and moving to deal with when it comes to moving home, it can still be stressful for them. Here's how to make sure your pets remain as calm as possible during your move.

** Routine**

Much like with children, pets thrive on routine. If you always take your dog for a walk at certain times of day, make sure you stick to it during your move. Set your pet's bowls etc up as soon as you get to your new home, this helps them to realise your move is a permanent one and they'll start settling in much sooner.

** Consider a Pet 'Holiday'**

You know your pet better than anyone. If you feel your cat or dog would benefit from a little break in a kennel or cattery while you move, book them in so they don't become unduly stressed throughout the process of moving into your new home.

** Keep Your Pet Safe**

There are so many stories of pets going missing during a move so you need to minimise the risks. Keep your pet contained in one room while the removal company is moving your belongings and try to set your pet up in your new home before the last of your belongings are moved in. This will help your pet to settle, while ensuring you know exactly where they are at all times.

Once you've moved consider keeping cats indoors for at least three weeks so they can familiarise themselves with your new home and build up a scent profile to allow them to find their way home once they do venture outside. And of course ensure you update your pet's microchip before allowing them to leave your home.
